  12. The Quarterly Report (1st Quarter 1989) of the Fund for UFO 
  13. Research includes this item:

  15. "In mid-March, the Executive Committee was informed that a 
  16. Baltimore resident had recorded a very provocative statement made 
  17. during a 'ham' radio rebroadcast of the communications between the 
  18. space shuttle Discovery and Houston ground control.  The statement 
  19. as recorded was as follows: 'Uh, Houston, this is Discovery.  We still 
  20. have that alien spacecraft under (observance?).'  To this there was 
  21. no response from Houston.  (The last word is a bit ambiguous, but the 
  22. other words -- including 'alien spacecraft' are completely clear.)  
  23. Subsequent investigations showed that the hams were 
  24. rebroadcasting 'raw' communications from the spacecraft, rather 
  25. than communications which had been passed first through Houston 
  26. control.  The so-called 'NASA select' audio channel, which was 
  27. transmitted by Houston to the Press and other interested news 
  28. media, *does not include this statement*.

  30. This audio tape initiated a search for confirmation that it had, in 
  31. fact, come from the spacecraft [Discovery, of course, :-)] and was 
  32. not some bizarre hoax by a ham radio operator who transmitted on 
  33. the same frequency as the Goddard ham station (WA3NAN).  The Fund 
  34. immediately arranged for a voice analysis to determine if the 
  35. transmission was authentic and if so, which astronaut made the 
  36. statement.  At this writing, the analysis was inconclusive."

  39. get to the bottom of this probable hoax, please email or post to the net.  
  40. (CSICOPers and fanatic skeptics: please don't waste net bandwidth 
  41. with more gratuitous UFO ridicule, which only confirms your 
  42. ignorance of the UFO literature.)
